· Never go ghost hunting alone. Haunted places are often in dark and secluded locations so go with other people for your own safety. Also, it's great to share your experience with others.
· Find out where there is a haunted location near you or a place you believe to be haunted. Before you enter the area, make sure you have permission first. Many haunted locations are not open to the public. Check out www.rawfear.net to find out the locations nearest to you, and which ones are safe to investigate.
· Tell other people where you are going and for how long in case you do not return! If possible, take a cell phone.
· Take a camera & a tape recorder in case you see or hear something supernatural. Make sure all batteries (including spares) are fully charged and ready to go. Spirits have been known to drain the power of instruments. Also, the better the quality of the equipment that you use, the more chance you have of capturing something good. For example, you could use an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) with an external microphone to try and capture ghostly voices.
· Try leaving a tape recorder or EVP in a secluded place of the building all night. You can then play the tape back in the morning & see if it picked anything up.
· To increase your chances of finding a ghost, why not buy yourself an EMF meter. Spirits have been know to interrupt or even create their own electromagnetic fields and EMF meters can detect extremely weak static, electric & magnetic fields. They are used by many ghost hunters.
· If possible, investigate the haunted area before it gets dark so you can get your bearings and know exactly where you're going. When it gets dark, make sure you have a flashlight.
· Take a note book and record significant occurrences e.g. abnormal changes in temperature, bizarre differences in the lighting, the general ambiance of the room, strange sounds or sightings. For best results, take your own individual notes and compare the results with each other later on.
· Try and talk to the spirit world while you're there. This can often help a ghost feel comfortable to show itself. Never say "Is there anybody there?" Always act as if you know the spirits there & ask open ended questions like "What is your name?"; "Where are you from?"; "What can I do for you?"; etc.
· If you are a spiritual person, why not ask for blessing or protection before you enter the haunted place. You may need it.
· Learn to trust your sixth sense. If you get a strange feeling of a presence, there may well be something out there. Why not take a photo and see what comes out? Don't just take photo's in front of you. Take them all around by suddenly snapping randomly in a different directions. This can be a very effective way of capturing unexpected phenomenon. (When taking photo's in the dark, make sure you refer to your camera guide book & find out how to get the best results. Also, make sure nothing gets in front of the lens, e.g. cigarette smoke, breath, your hair, camera strap, etc.)
· If you think you have witnessed something, first try and be objective and look for other possible reasons for the strange event. Don't forget, when you are in a supposedly haunted place with a scary atmosphere, then your mind can play tricks on you.
· The best times to go ghost hunting are on or around a full moon, during peak geomagnetic fields or solar storms, during the colder seasons, and at a time when reported sightings often occur in your chosen location.
